If you’re trying to grow your business, you are absolutely going to have to confront fear. 

This fear can take many forms and may look different for everyone. It’s important to know how to handle the fear and how to take care of yourself in the process.

The first thing to do is to recognize if what you’re feeling is fear. Fear might feel like panic, overwhelm, disorientation, or numbness. You might have a racing heart, dry mouth, or shaky hands.

Next, realize that fear is a totally normal emotion. It’s a big and pervasive myth that to be an entrepreneur you have to be fearless. Fear WILL come up on this journey. It’s better to have a plan than it is to pretend like you’ll never have to worry about it (or think that something is wrong with you if you do).

Fear, like all of our emotions, isn’t “bad”. It’s an incredibly useful tool, and fear especially can alert us to things that need our attention. It can help us realize where we’re pushing against our limits, where we might be in need of extra time or learning, or what issues we haven’t yet resolved.

Once you remember that fear isn’t showing up to pull us off track, remind yourself that rationalizing yourself out of fear won’t work. Instead of trying to think yourself back to a calmer state, take a little action. Shift your nervous system by running your hands in cold water, then switch to hot. Do this several times to help your brain come back into your body and reduce your fight-or-flight response. You can also do breathing exercises that will help you come back down, too.

Fear doesn’t just show when we hit a major milestone or push ourselves to meet especially large goals. It can come up when things from our past are still unresolved and bothering us beneath the surface. When we’re feeling fearful, it’s important to slow down, give ourselves what we need, remind ourselves that we’re okay, and ask why we’re feeling scared.
